EN: On the fourth floor of Deichman Bjørvika Karima Ashadu’s video work "Machine Boys" (2024) will be on display during the summer.
NO: Med «Machine Boys» utforsker Ashadu den uformelle økonomien rundt motorsykkeltaxier – på folkemunne kjent som «Okada» – i megabyen Lagos. For noen år siden ble de forbudt på grunn av myndighetenes manglende evne til å regulere bransjen. Verket skildrer en hardfør gruppe motorsyklister som fortsetter dette ulovlige arbeidet i jakten på økonomisk selvstendighet og uavhengighet. I «Machine Boys» dveler Ashadu ved konsekvensene av dette forbudet, samtidig som hun skildrer de daglige ritualene og utfordringene Okada-sjåførene møter.

EN: “Machine Boys” explores the informal economy of motorcycle taxis – colloquially known as “Okada”, in the mega-city of Lagos. Banned a few years ago due to the government’s inability to regulate the industry, the work portrays a hardy group of bikers who continue this illegal work, seeking to attain financial autonomy and independence. In Machine Boys Ashadu dwells on the consequences of this ban, meanwhile portraying the daily rituals and challenges faced by Okada riders.
“Machine Boys” will be on display on the 4th level of Deichman Bjørvika in the section foreign language.
