MARIUS MOLDVÆR - Silver Tongue and Gold Teeth

  • Afresse og sted for utstillingen: RAM Kongens gate 15 OSLO NORWAY (map)

RAM is proud to present the first Scandinavian solo-exhibition of British ceramic artist Sam Chatto (b. 1996, UK). Despite his young age, Chatto has already garnered international attention for his mastery of traditional Japanese techniques which he combines with an experimental sculptural practise.

In his work, Chatto always engages with his surroundings and maintain a close connection to nature. During the autumn of 2024 he had a studio residency at Senter for keramisk kunst in Ringebu, where he explored different local stoneware clays and developed an unconventional method of combining rough stoneware with pure porcelain clay. The dramatic natural surroundings of Ringebu, which have attracted artists for generations, added important impulses to the process, imbedding the arch-Norwegian forest landscape into the sculptures. The resulting works of this Norwegian residency will make the core of the exhibition at RAM. A selection of Chatto’s were presented by RAM at Ceramic Brussels in January, where they caused sensation and sold out.

Sam Chatto studied Art History at Edinburgh University and trained as a potter at the Northshore Pottery. In 2023 he apprenticed with the renowned Japanese master Yagi Akira. He has participated in several exhibitions at the Redfern Gallery, London, and Hauser & Wirth (Make) in Somerset. In April 2025 he had his first solo exhibition at Sokyo Gallery in Kyoto.
