This exhibition presents a speculative future. Realizing to what point technology has compromised our ways of seeing and thinking, humanity has made radical adaptations to preserve itself from the extinction of thought. The exhibition starts with an inversion of media theorist Marshall McLuhan’s concept of “an eye for an ear.” It ends with the lonely sound of the last male Kauai O’o bird, singing its mating call to a long-gone female, extinct at the hands of human development. Working conceptually across multiple mediums—photo, video, sound, and sculpture—AFTER IMAGES is an immersive meditation on technology, memory, extinction, and the role of sight and sound in human intelligence.

ABOUT
MENU
Tenthaus Art Collective has been working together in various constellations since 2009. The collective is characterized by an open, process-oriented form of participation and collaboration. They focus on local contexts exploring collectivity and inclusion through different forms of engagement . Tenthaus began as an artists-in-schools project and over a decade later they continue to maintain strong relations to the community and works to cultivate and nurture its environment.
Today Tenthaus encompasses both a project room and an exhibition space, a mobile studio, and a wide range of curatorial projects. As a collective Tenthaus reimagines themselves and what it means to be artists working with the public, and what makes a relevant socially engaged practice today. The collective works with discursive events, radio, research, exchanges, workshops and exhibitions with an international orientation. Each of its members brings a distinct set of skills, practices and cultural knowledge.
The distinctive result of their collaborations and collective discussion is visible through their work.
For many years we have been acting locally and connecting globally, and our resent curatorial projects opened possibilities to sustain these dialogues in long-term global collaborations. Whilst connecting hyperlocally with STEDSVEVEN, a project in Grønland and Tøyen where Tenthaus is invited by Oslo Kommunes Kunstsamling 2024 – 26, THE OVEN is a collaboration with Studio 150 in Bangkok, Space 413/PACK in Seoul and GUDSKUL in Jakarta encompassing exhibitions, translation, discursive programme, publications and more starting in 2024. Singapore Art Museum invites Tenthaus and THE OVEN a two months EX-SITUE residency in August and September 2024, where we will continue our practice of reaching out to potential collaborators in each locality and from our ever-growing network.
Tenthaus is funded by Norsk Kulturråd (2016-2019, 2019-2022, 2022-2025 Arrangørstøtte) and driftstøtte Oslo kommune, support for workshops by Sparebankstiftelsen 2021-2024 as well as various other project support.
