Club Science – Plants Also Hate Emptiness

  • Institut français d'Oslo 0355 Oslo Norway (map)

Plants are like humans. They hate emptiness. Thus, even in artificial sites built by man they will colonize and occupy the space. This colonization will occur even if strong constraints are expressed for their growth, such as the availability of water or the presence of pollutants at high levels. Through a few examples, Jean-Philippe Bedell, professor at the ENTPE engineering school, will illustrate the dynamics of colonization of stormwater management works and industrial sites, and present how plants occupy the emptiness.
